Francia / Languedoc-Roussillon

Seductive red dessert wine made from organically grown grapes from the hills of Maury, about 30 km NW of Perpignan. Decomposed shale and brown mark soils, with southern exposure. Manual harvest and certified biodynamic cultivation.
16,5% vol.


Appellation: Maury Vin Doux Naturel

Grape Variety: 90% Grenache, 5% Macabeo & 5% Carignan.

Winemaking: Fermented in stainless steel vats using natural yeasts from de-stemmed grapes. Fermentation stopped by the addition of alcohol ("mutage") followed by 30 days maceration before ageing in outdoors in glass demijohns for one year. Then aged for an average of 30 years in large French oak vats (35,000 liters).

Tasting Notes: Residual sugar 92 gr./l. Best enjoyed: 2023 to 2026.

What do the experts say?

Jancis Robinson: The difficulty with writing about a wine like this is that it's so complex that there is so much there, the flavours and aromas keep emerging, whirling, whorling, rising and falling, that the tasting note either becomes a shopping list of flavours or a metaphor to snapshot capture the essence of the wine.

I'll give you the shopping list, although it's more like a kaleidoscope in the mouth: cherry, cigar, ginger snaps, smoked pecans, marmalade, marmelo. Quince and candided peel. Dried apricots, Incredible texture, scrunched silk and tissue paper on stone. Masses of souk spices and pomegranate and oh my god it just goes on and on and on. No end in sight... And I'll give you the metaphor: Watch an African sunrise. But if you've ever sat on a rock, just before dawn - the smell of last - night's heat and campfire, today's cold-dawn dust and acacia trees held still n the milk-blue pause before the light breaks the horizon - you will know ecactly wht this wine is like.
