Information about the winery

The wine growing districts of Asti & Monferrato mostly consist of small producers with vineyards scattered like a mosaic across the villages and rolling hills of the Piedmont. Minifundia is the norm, and many producers own parcels in a variety of different locations, often some distance from their winery. In this respect, Pico Maccario is quite an exception. At 70 ha., the vineyard of Pico Maccario is the largest solely owned vineyard in the Piedmont. Its young owners, brothers Pico & Vitaliano Maccario, fully understand the importance and uniqueness of this asset and thus dedicate a sizeable amount of time and money to its development. Vineyard management practices here are modern and impeccable, reminding one of the Napa Valley… they use ecologically friendly pine posts to train the vines (over 77,000!) and plant red rose bushes (over 4.500!) in front of every row of vines. The winemaking facilities are equally modern and focus of production is on fresh, berry-like wines made from the Barbera grape variety, typical of Asti. Their flagship is called Lavignone, a dry, light-bodied red, made entirely in stainless steel. It is packed with fresh fruit and beautifully balanced, without the excess acidity so often encountered with Barbera wines.
