Information about the winery

As the first winery in China, Changyu Pioneer was founded in 1892 by Zhang Bishi, an overseas Chinese diplomat. He decided to start his pioneering winery in Yantai and named it “Zhang Yu Wine Company”. He imported more than 500,000 vine plants from the United States and Europe and thus paved the way for modern Chinese wine production, with the support of an Austrian winegrower: Baron von Babo.
After more than 120 years of growth, its portfolio includes wines, brandy, sparkling wines and healthy liqueurs and is well received in more than 20 countries. Changyu is also the largest producer of Chinese wine in the country, with a high market share nationwide. The Ningxia region is located approximately 1,330 kilometers west of Beijing. It is located in central western China, on the periphery of the Gobi Desert and is fed by the Yellow River, which has its source in the clean and natural Tibetan Plateau.
Due to the aridity of the land and the longer than normal hours of sunlight during the growing season (around 3,000 hours of sunlight compared to the Bordeaux average of 2,052 hours), the berries are allowed to fully ripen, developing a fruity character full of flavor. The grapes enjoy ideal growing conditions in the Helan Mountains region, 1,100 meters above sea level.
The desert with its hot daytime temperatures and cold nights helps wines retain their freshness.
In 2017, Changyu unveiled the Changyu International Wine Research and Development Center project, which will include research, development and production of wine, brandy , healthy spirits and sparkling wine. It also focuses on eco-tourism and cultural exhibition.
